The $100 Million Vision Preston Spoke Out Loud — and How God Made It Happen

Jenny Peterson Season 5 Episode 157

Ever notice how life feels lighter when you know exactly where you’re headed? We go deep on vision—what it is, why it fails when it’s vague, and how to make it specific enough to drive daily action. From a hilarious Cheesecake Factory mix‑up to a high‑stakes revenue target said out loud, we share how clarity, accountability, and faith turn a fuzzy wish into a lived reality.

We unpack simple tools that actually work: writing the vision and making it plain, turning a digital vision board into your phone background, and using short, repeatable cues that keep your brain scanning for opportunities. You’ll hear how a bold “$100M” stake in the ground changed hiring, planning, and timing, and why acting as if you already need the systems for your future accelerates growth. We talk about pairing goals with prayer—asking God to open the right doors and close the wrong ones—and why faith without works gets you nowhere. Our Puerto Rico story ties it together: naming the feeling we wanted for our family, moving our feet, and watching the right home and school open up at the right time.

If you’re in a low season, start with a small, clear target and put it where you’ll see it 200 times a day. If you lead a team, share the vision even if it scares you; accountability is a gift, not a threat. If you’re married, align your personal and shared goals so your effort compounds instead of collides. By the end, you’ll have a simple framework to set a destination, keep it visible, and take daily steps that future‑you will thank you for.

SPEAKER_02:

Welcome to another podcast with Jenny and I. Today we are going to talk about vision. And I've been doing some consulting this week with some companies and with the owners of the companies and asking them what it is, like what's their one year, their three-year, their five-year goals, and their vision of where they want to take the company so that I'm able to understand how to help them run the company to achieve what they want. And so, and also, Jenny, vision's been on your mind a lot lately. Tell us why.

SPEAKER_00:

Yes, because we're getting ready to go on our U cruise with our top affiliates. And I've been spending a lot of time thinking and praying about what I'm going to say to these amazing women. And vision keeps coming up. I need to share the vision with them. So that's what I'm going to be doing. And I also did a digital vision board training with my young women's group on Wednesday.

unknown:

Okay.

SPEAKER_02:

Young Women's, what is that?

SPEAKER_00:

Okay, in our church, we belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We each have a job or a responsibility. It's called a calling. And mine, I'm in the young women's presence. So I work with the teenagers, teenage girls between 12 and 18. And press them what's yours. Tell them what yours is. Just for fun.

SPEAKER_02:

I teach early morning seminary at 620 in the morning to the youth.

SPEAKER_00:

It's like a Bible study class in our home.

SPEAKER_02:

And there's three teachers. So I rotate. So it's not all the time, but it's like two, two night, two days a week.

SPEAKER_00:

How many kids come to our house?

SPEAKER_02:

Do we have like 25 to 30 kids that come?

SPEAKER_00:

That's right.

SPEAKER_02:

It's amazing. And they I'll tell you what, if you want to be uplifted, work with the youth. Like it is the best thing ever.

SPEAKER_00:

I agree. We both love it. But that is not what we're talking about.

SPEAKER_02:

No, we're talking about vision. It's vision.

SPEAKER_00:

And just so you know, this podcast is raw, unedited, unscripted. We're just rolling with it.

SPEAKER_02:

We're just rolling.

SPEAKER_00:

Something that I shared with my young women's group about vision is you wouldn't just get into a car and start driving, right? What's the very first thing that you do when you get into a car?

SPEAKER_02:

Put in the GPS. That's right.

SPEAKER_00:

You have to put in your destination. Where are you going?

SPEAKER_02:

First, I put my seatbelt on.

SPEAKER_00:

Very good. Yeah. Where are you going? And there's a couple scriptures that I love that talk about vision. Proverbs 29, 18, where there is no vision, the people perish. And then Habakkuk 2, too, write the vision and make it plain. So once you have the vision, you got to make sure it's clear. It's plain. And I have a funny story about that.

SPEAKER_02:

Please share, Jen.

SPEAKER_00:

I will. So many years ago, Press and I were going on a date, and we got a babysitter, we're going out with friends. We're living our best lives. And we're supposed to meet our friends at the Cheesecake Factory. We're running late because back then I was notoriously late to everything.

SPEAKER_02:

Some habits die hard.

SPEAKER_00:

I am I'm so much better now. What are you talking about? I am so much better now. But back then I was late to everything. And I remember my friend calling me and saying, Okay, we're here. Where are you? And I'm like, we're five minutes away. We were not five minutes away, we're like 15 minutes away. But we're almost there. Okay, we'll get a table. So they get a table. We show up at the cheesecake factory and we can't see them. So I call her and I'm like, where are you at? She's like, buy the bathrooms in the back. So we go back there. We can't see her anywhere. I call her again. Turns out we're at two different cheesecake factories. The vision was go to the cheesecake factory, right? With our friends at this time. But it wasn't clear which one.

SPEAKER_02:

Have you ever done something like that? I feel like maybe sometimes with like your kids and you're like, go do something, go be productive. And then they're like, go play video games. And you're like, that's not what I meant, you know? And it's like, if you don't have a clear vision, you and your people don't know what that means. Right? And it's like, and then you don't get the result that you actually wanted. It's kind of like me when I go to the gym. I just go randomly. There's not like a clear set workout plan and regime that I'm using and like day-to-day structure. I'm just going so I feel good. And that's why I get the results I do.

SPEAKER_00:

But you're so right though. And especially you were talking about how you consult, you know, business owners. As a business owner, it's your responsibility to create the vision for your company. And if you don't know what the vision for your company is or where your company is going, how are your people, just like you said, your employees, the people that work for you, how are they going to know where we're where we're going?

SPEAKER_02:

It's true. So I had actually had interesting experiences like that a couple years ago. And and first of all, the thing is, is find your vision and find a scary vision. Like Jenny, I'll talk here in a second about it, but it's like it is amazing when you have a vision and you're working for that vision and it's a righteous vision, what God can do. So I was on a podcast probably three or four years ago, and I remember this guy was on this, I was on this podcast, and he asked me, like, what's the vision for your company? Like, what's your big goal that you guys, where are you gonna be in like four years? And I and I just blurted it out. I was like, we're gonna be a hundred million dollar company. And I sat there and I was like, oh my goodness, I just said that in public. Like, you know, and you and I was like, I think we were like$10 or$12 million company at that time. And I was just like, that's what we're gonna do. And maybe it was my ego coming out to be like, yeah, you know. And I started sitting there thinking afterwards, like, how are we going to be a hundred million dollar company? And so we started building the company of like, hey, what's it gonna take in breaking it down? And then within two years, some events took place and we were over a hundred million dollar company. And and I couldn't see how clearly we would get there at that moment when I was on that podcast. But because I had put it out and we started working towards those things as if we were a hundred million and we were going to become a hundred million dollar company, things started taking place and opportunities started to come about that within two years we we achieved that goal, and now we're way bigger than that.

SPEAKER_00:

That's amazing.

SPEAKER_02:

It makes me think of like our vision board. So Jenny and I did a vision board, and we talk about this all the time. What was this four or five years ago, maybe?

SPEAKER_00:

Mm-hmm. Um we've been doing vision boards forever, I feel like.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, but we had we had a big one we did as a couple, and we're like, here's the things we want. And we were like, okay, this is gonna take five, ten years. Like we had, I remember like I had a sports car on there, and I was never a big car guy, but I was like, dude, I want to get a Corvette. So we had a trip to Europe with our kids. We had a beach house, a beach house on there.

SPEAKER_00:

Which, if you don't know, we now live in Puerto Rico.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. We live three minute, five-minute golf car ride. It depends who's driving. If Jenny's driving, maybe ten minutes. If I'm driving to see the sunset at night or see the sea turtles, it's a good solid three minutes. True. So but it was like we had these things on here that we were like, okay, these are oh, I think we had a cabin on there.

SPEAKER_00:

We did. And so and everything came within two years. Faster than I thought it would.

SPEAKER_02:

And and here's the thing is first thing to remember is you find your vision, you build out your business or whatever it is that you want to receive that vision, but two, it has to be in the will of the Lord. Right? Like if it is a righteous goal and it will bring glory to God along the way, then put in the effort to it, right? Because the thing we thought this was gonna take us like our lifetime to hit, you know? And within two years, all of those things have taken place. And I remember when we when we bought the house here, we're just like, babe, this was the last thing on our vision board that we had just completed. And it's just it's amazing, right? And it's like when you work with God, he can open up so many more opportunities than we could have ever dreamed of.

SPEAKER_00:

And when you're making your vision, make it scary, like Preston said. Make it big. Like if you're writing it down, because write it down, make it plain, go for the impossible because God specializes in the impossible.

SPEAKER_02:

I love that. I love that because it's like we had, you know, like the thing is we have a God of miracles, right? And it's like, dude, we think that we sometimes aren't able to accomplish some big and crazy things. But with God, yeah, you can accomplish anything, right? It's just and we're just getting started, right? Like we're just getting started in our journey of things that we're doing. But so, so tell me, so vision boards. We make this vision board. I put it on my phone, so I see it every day. What what did you do with your vision boards? You just did a lesson on vision boards. Tell me your lesson.

SPEAKER_00:

I taught my young women's group how to do a digital vision board and told them to put it as a background on their phone. Why? Because the average person looks at their phone 204 times a day. And I want them to have their vision before their eyes and constantly be reminded of their goals and where they're going. I have a story of how not to do this.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay, we still we love this person a lot.

SPEAKER_00:

I get nervous because I'm like, what if they listen to the podcast? Okay, dad, I love you. There's something that we did as a family growing up that just really didn't work. The intention was good behind it. It was a really great family thing that we did. But looking back at it now, I wish that we had done things a little bit differently. So every year on Christmas Eve, my family, and just so you know, I'm the oldest of seven kids, we would circle up. And my dad had this great idea that we would give a gift to Jesus the next year. We were gonna give a gift to Jesus. And we all wrote down the gift that we were giving to Jesus. My dad's a professional artist, and he had this He is amazing, by the way. He's very talented. This wooden hand-carved box, very intricate, beautiful. I can see it in my mind. It's painted gold. We would all put in the box our gift to Jesus. It's a great thing to do. The problem is after Christmas was done, we take that box and we put it in a drawer and we wouldn't look at it again until the next Christmas Eve. And I remember thinking when my dad would start talking again, like about did we give our gift to Jesus? I'm like, I don't remember what I wrote down on the paper. I don't remember the gift that I said I was going to give. And that's because we didn't have it before our eyes. You can't just write it down once or say it once and then never think about it or look at it again or put it in a drawer. You want to keep it in front of you and you want to keep speaking it out too.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay. So, like the reason why you have to keep speaking about it, talking about it, seeing it, is because you have to act on it. Right? Like it just like in the Bible where it says like faith without works is dead. If you have faith that you want these things or that you think you can accomplish these things, but then you forget about them and they're not on the front of your mind all the time. Guess where your works is going to be? Guess where your effort is going to be, not on those things. Right? But if you always are bringing up and you're always seeing it subconsciously, you're going to start putting the effort into those things. You're going to start looking and seeing for those opportunities that come to act on that will lead you to other opportunities. Right. And so that's why it's so important that you know what your vision is or what you put on your vision board, and that you see it all the time. So you are subconsciously looking for those things. It's not one of these things where it's like, hey, I say it and I put it on this vision board, and then just magically it appears, right? It's no, we have to do the work too. But hopefully, as we're seeing this over and over and over and over, we're gravitating and training our mind to think differently and looking for opportunities to accomplish those things that we want. Have you ever wanted something so bad that you're like, I will do whatever. I'm gonna go all in on this. And all of a sudden, you start seeing those things happen because that's what you're so focused on. You know, and so I think I think that's that's the one part that I think sometimes people miss. They have this huge vision of what they want to accomplish, but they're like, I'm gonna do it tomorrow. It's kind of like me going to the gym. I see myself being fit and shredded abs and big old muscles. And then I go back to bed.

SPEAKER_00:

Stop.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay, I don't want to go back to bed. I'll probably go eat like a Twinkie or something.

SPEAKER_00:

Stop. But you're right. And with vision, for me, it's very spiritual. It's all about faith. Faith without works is dead, though. So you can't just say it and believe it. You do have to take action. I love in the scriptures how often does the Lord say, Ask and you shall receive, or you have not because you ask not. Right. So with the doing a vision board, I also include the Lord on it in my prayers. I pray, like, Lord, if this is your will, please make it easy. And please open doors that I can't open. And if it's not, shut the doors. I literally say that. Like if this is not for me or not in your plan for me, please help me to listen closely to the spirit so I can so I can know what you want from me, right?

SPEAKER_02:

And and sometimes it's not easy, right?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_02:

A lot of times it's not easy. I can I can tell you a lot of times it's in our business where we thought, I mean, like we talked about last time, where we thought we were gonna lose it all. And then you see the the hand of the Lord come in and kind of just give you blessings along the way to pick up where you, I mean, we thought we had no clue what we were doing.

SPEAKER_00:

So the fastest vision board that I ever manifested with the Lord was the one of getting into the house that we're sitting in right now. We came down January 2024, right?

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

Came to this beautiful neighborhood and both looked at each other and were like, this is it, this is where we want to live. If we're moving to Puerto Rico, this is the neighborhood that we want to be in. But there was one problem. What was it?

SPEAKER_01:

I can think of a lot of problems, but the price?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. Preston's like, this is impossible. We can't afford any of the houses in this place.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

And I made a vision board. I put down the house that I wanted. I put down the beach. I put down that I wanted a pool. I put down like we could possibly get in the neighborhood, but all of the things that we could afford were complete gut renovation.

SPEAKER_02:

And I remember you even you even wrote down words of how we felt when we were here. And you asked each one of the kids, you're like, I want to know what that feeling is. When you're here, what do you feel? I remember we were on a boat, we're actually going to do a snorkel trip because you were like, I want to remember this feeling so that when I'm not here in Puerto Rico, I can remember the feeling that I want and envision that in my vision of what I believe we want to accomplish.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay. And I'm going to tell you exactly what I did. So not only was it the screensaver on my phone, but I would look at that vision board. I would read that note with how it made us feel. Why did we want to move to Puerto Rico? I made affirmations all about the Lord is getting my dream house ready for me, all of these things. And I would go over that every single day. And not only that, I would, I would envision what it would feel like to stand on the beach that we were at when we went to that bonfire with all those families, the sand beneath my toes. Seriously, I would picture it with all of my senses, smelling the salt, salt water in the air, feeling the breeze, hearing the cokey frogs in the background every single day. I don't know if you knew I did all this stuff. What happens is, and I did, this is the prayer that I that I prayed to God. I was like, Lord, if it is your will, please make it easy for this particular thing. Make things fall into place. Open doors. And if it's not, close the doors because I don't want to move my family from Utah to Puerto Rico if this is not the right thing for us. And in March, we came down, we found a house that was perfect. And we got it for 45% less than it was listed the year before.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

And then we closed on that house in April. And it was just very, very quick.

SPEAKER_02:

And then like getting the kids into school.

SPEAKER_00:

Oh gosh. Yeah. I we there was a there's a school on this island that is the best school on the island. And it's where I wanted my kids to be. It's an English speaking school. We are learning Spanish, but we we are not fluent in Spanish yet. And we come down. When did we move down here?

SPEAKER_02:

We came down in March.

SPEAKER_00:

No, no, no.

SPEAKER_02:

Bought the house in March or put an offer in March.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Came back in April to close on the house. And then we moved down here like June 3rd.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. And that's when I started trying to get them into school for that school year. And I was told the cutoff date was in February. Like you are late. There's no way this is going to happen. And to get into the school, it was, it was easier for me to get into college than to get my kids into the school. They have And cheaper. They have they have so many things that you have to do to get into the school. And the admins lady was shut it down. She was like, absolutely not. You can apply in January. And I prayed about it and I was like, Lord, if my kids are supposed to be in the school, please, first of all, soften her heart. And please, bless it, doors will open and things will fall into place. And I continued to go through that list of things to do as if the admins lady was going to tell me, yes. We're going to make an exception. We're going to let you in. We had other friends that moved down at the same time. And they were also told no. But she let our kids in and they started in August.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. No, it's true. And it's, I'm just sitting here thinking about this, right? And I think a lot of times when we've had lulls and like low points in our lives, it's because we didn't have a vision, right? Like we didn't know what we were wanting to do. We weren't aligned and we didn't know what we were trying to accomplish. And so if you're going through some of those moments right now, right, trust me, I've been up in some of those moments in the last year to two years. But I will tell you the most important thing to do is find a vision of what you're trying to accomplish. Even if it's something super small, just to give you that alignment, right? That that thing that you're working towards to get you pulled out of anything that you're in and start working on it. And then you can keep growing on top of that, that vision, until you can build it to where you really want to be. But it's it's the truth. I thought as we're sitting here talking about that, one of the biggest things for us is if we don't know where we want to go, how can the Lord help us? Right? How can anyone help us? Right? It's like we've got to find that vision of where we want to be and where we want to go, and then the Lord will help you get there. And and He can do miracles.

SPEAKER_00:

So Do you know what I just realized?

SPEAKER_02:

What's that?

SPEAKER_00:

I'm happier when I'm working towards a vision.

SPEAKER_02:

I am too.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay, something else I want to say. So you talked about how you were really scared when you were on that podcast and you you said we're gonna be a hundred million dollar company, right? I was reading a book, I think it's called The Vision Driven Leader by Michael Hyatt. And like this week, I'm getting ready to talk to my leaders, my top affiliates, and share with them a really big, bold vision. And he says, when you're getting ready to share your vision with others, you're gonna be filled with doubt and fear and you're gonna be afraid and you're gonna maybe second guess yourself, like, is this too big? Should I, should I make it smaller? And he said, you need to share it anyways. And something that I was thinking about is what would happen if I didn't share this vision with my people, with my affiliates. The reality is if I don't share that with my people, we'll never hit it.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, and I think the reality too is if you don't share it, it's because you don't believe it. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, how many times do we have that where we have a vision or we want to think big, but we keep it hidden or we keep it to ourselves, and we don't because we don't want to held accountable to it, right?

SPEAKER_00:

Or we're afraid what other people are gonna think of it.

SPEAKER_02:

Which which I'll tell you this. So we're in Puerto Rico and we are surrounded by extremely, extremely successful people, like top 1% of every industry they're in down here. And not once do I hear people talking negatively, or if someone does something and it doesn't work out, we've all every one of us have had business failures down here. And not once are people like, oh, that's horrible, or this guy. You know, it's like we all are uplifting and it's like, dude, great job trying to try, like, great job going after it. Or and and some of these guys are worth a crazy amount of money, and they're doing something super, super small little business because they're like, ah, that'd be fun. And it's like, that's the thing, is everyone's encouraging. A lot of times when it's the people that are like haters and stuff, it's like the people that they're not really the ones that are gonna be there to support you, anyways. You know what I'm saying? So it's like, go run for it, you know, go do it, go do the scary thing, you know. But it's like if we don't, if we're not able to talk about it openly, then it's probably because you don't really believe it. Because the moment you start talking about it openly and you're like, hey, I'm gonna actually put forth the effort, I'm actually gonna do this, then you will, right? And then things will start put taking place. And that's the other thing is once you start talking about openly, now you're gonna be held accountable. And it's that accountability I think that we're afraid of. But it's like if we start acting differently and start running like our business or our family or whatever it is to what we want to accomplish, then we're going to start putting energy into those areas to change to become that person or that business that can hit those types of goals. And the hard part is if these are visions, it means we're not there now, right? So it does mean that there does have to have some type of change happen along the way. And a lot of times with us as humans, we are afraid of change. We're afraid of being something that we're not right now. We're afraid of the unknown. But sometimes that's the thing is when do we grow the most with God? It's in that molding session, right? That season of where he is molding us to be able to see something more clear or bigger or to receive those blessings that he has in store. But we just couldn't see him in the moment, right? Because we weren't that person. Like I look back, this I'm glad you brought this up. I look back, we just did a private equity deal like two, three years ago in my pest control company. And that the last four years, I've learned more in business of how to run my business. And I'm like, I could do it so much faster, so much quicker. And it's opened my mind up so much bigger to running a business. And I'm like, what was the first 15 to 18 years in business for? I'm like, if I had known this day one, I could have been 10 times bigger, 10 times faster. But the difference is I would not have been the person I am today had I not gone through those 15 years. And it took me 15 years to develop those traits and that talent and the characters that I needed to be able to handle the growth of the last five years. And so that's what we forget, right? And that's that's the difference, is there are people that learn those things quicker because maybe they're doing things different, maybe they have a different vision, or maybe it takes us a little bit longer to find that vision. But it's that journey for us that we have to go through so that we can be ready when those times come. And it's like, you know, I look, yeah, now I'm a different person. I think differently, I run businesses differently than I did 10 years ago, 15 years ago, five years ago, because of all the experiences that I've gone through. Right. I think same thing with you, right? Like you've, you know, you think five, 10 years ago who you were and the person you were. It's like, dude, you're completely different. But it's because you had that vision and you grew and you got stretched, and the Lord blessed you because you'd put the time in to do those things.

SPEAKER_00:

It's like this journey of becoming. And I do believe that we are in uh relentless pursuit of becoming the man or woman that God created us to be.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. No, it's true. So go out. Go out and write down what your vision is. And I think something that's important too. If you're married, write down a vision which you want for you and your spouse. We've done that.

SPEAKER_00:

We need to do that. We need to do it again.

SPEAKER_02:

We've done it in the past and it's been amazing.

SPEAKER_00:

It's been amazing. Where we need to do it again.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, throw us under the bus. So, but no, it's true. But it's it's amazing because when you're working together on something, then you're aligned on something. Exactly. And so, but go out and do that. Go out, build your visions. I want to hear about it. Go comment on our Facebook pages or Instagram pages.

SPEAKER_00:

No, here's what I here's what I want you to do.

SPEAKER_02:
